I have noticed for quite a while that the human race is becoming more and more insular, self fish and intolerant...if everything in their garden is rosy then these numpties are content to concern themselves, only with events happening in their own country..or 100 yards from their front door...I have seen it far too often on the net and closer to home, Glasgow used to be famous for the friendliness of its people, now as a goth I don't expect to be welcomed with open arms but the hostility doled out to tourists from Glasgwegians is shameful...sadly this problem is global while 1,000's of people starve to death in Darfur, Sudan, the world turns the other cheek and concentrates on the little unimportant details of its banal existence...this selfishness is disgraceful..and reprehensible....I have also read that many elderly people go for months without seeing their friends or family! I'd love to hear the pitiful excuses for that disgusting level of ignorant cruelty...if thats old age I hope to die at 50!.

Well things are getting better not worse, Society is more tollerent of people with different characteristics than the majority. That's why we have such things as the DDA and Race Relations legislation in this country. There's still improvements to be made such as the guaranteeing of equal rights for homosexuals. As for what's been happening in Darfur, many situations which have culminated with unjustifiable levels of cruelty been inflicted on people have occured in the world, but now because of the blobalised way in which news is covered more attention is given to these events. In the past people far away were not aware of these events. I think more could be done about Darfur and think that the UN should demand the withdrawall of all arabs from the area to prevent reprisals from returning people and more attrocities been inflicted on the returners. It should also be given independence.

Thats as maybe but I was thinking more on a personal level society has become far more selfish, and the media have encouraged this insularity, to such a degree, that it has become something of a trend..

I think we're just more aware of the way society reacts than we ever were before. The media do have an influence on culture, especially by playing on fear and instability.

Hmm, but wear do we draw the line between being selfish and "butting in"? The US gives other countries food to the point of neglect of its own, but yet rudeness; which to me is a part of selfishness, is so damn wide spread it's almost unbarable to go into a crowd of any size...

Witchcraft in the case of Darfur there is no such thing as butting in as we fell fed westeners discuss this 10 people have died in an empty barren desert..the UN has pledged $4.5million to Sudan, but the crux of the matter is this... how much of that do you think the refugees will actually see 1 or maybe 2 million, they will be lucky to see $500,000...there is absolutely NO justification in an affluent country allowing people to starve to death in 2005

the problem with africa though is that governments over there are all so corrupt, almost without exception. and there's only so much we can do. if we went into every country in Africa where aid was being misplaced, then we'd take over africa again. When namibia gained independence the UN pledged $60 million to them, and did any of that go towards helping out the namibian people? no, sam n'joma bought himself an aeroplane.

I agree and as the $4.5 million, came from 1 of the most corrupt aid organisations on earth, the mighty UN one can safetly assume, that the Sudanese will indeed be left to starve, an unspeakable crime which ranks alongside the allies allowing millions of eastern europeans to die from hunger and disease in WW2.

Is it an impossible task to help these people, the world raced to indonesia with indecent haste, probably to protect their investment...there is nothing but sand, heat, flies and suffering, in Darfur.
